eSIM vs Pocket WiFi - Which is Better for Travelers?

Japan Travel Series: eSIM versus Pocket WiFi

If you’re deep into planning your upcoming trip to Japan, you might be wondering how to stay connected with the rest of the world. Whether it’s to contact your loved ones, touch base with fellow travel buddies, or share your adventures on social media, being on the grid is a crucial (and totally valid) concern. Lucky for you, I’ve been traveling to Japan since childhood, and while my family has always notoriously opted for Pocket Wifi, I’ve recently done a ton of research on each viable option. Below is a breakdown of all of the pros + cons and important points to consider.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that is embedded in your smartphone or device. It basically allows you to activate a cellular plan (aka use your phone on vacation) without needing a physical SIM card. Most smartphones support eSIM technology, making it an increasingly popular choice for travelers.

Pros of Using an eSIM:

  1. Convenience: Easily switch between different carriers and plans without changing physical SIM cards. (popular eSIM services include Klook, Airalo, and Ubigi)

  2. Space-saving: No need to carry an extra bulky device; it's all within your smartphone.

  3. Cost-effective: Often significantly cheaper than renting or purchasing a Pocket WiFi device, especially for short trips.

Cons of Using an eSIM:

  1. Restrictions: eSIM can only be used on smartphones that are unlocked. Contact your provider/carrier before purchasing an eSIM to make sure your phone is unlocked.

  2. Compatibility: Not all devices support eSIM technology.

  3. Local Plans: May require purchasing a local plan, which can be challenging in certain countries.

Points to Consider:

  • Data Usage: 1 GB data equates to approximately 10-11 hours of social media scrolling and 2.5 hours of video streaming.

  • Flexibility: Most eSIM plans allow you to easily add GB of data as needed.

What is a Pocket WiFi?

Pocket WiFi is a portable device that provides internet access. It essentially acts as a personal hotspot, allowing multiple devices to connect to the internet simultaneously.

Pros of Using Pocket WiFi:

  1. Multiple Devices: Can connect several devices at once making it an ideal option for families or groups.

  2. Consistency: Reliable connection (usually with good coverage).

  3. Ease: Simple to use, no need to change settings on your smartphone.

Cons of Using Pocket WiFi:

  1. Extra Device(s): Requires carrying an additional device and keeping it charged, meaning, you’ll likely also need to carry an external battery.

  2. Rental Costs: Can be expensive to rent or purchase, with potential data limits.

  3. Dependence on Battery: If the device runs out of battery, you lose internet access.

Points to Consider:

  • Flexibility: Many Pocket Wifi services offer a range of flexible data storage plans that range from 1 GB to unlimited GB per day. (Japan Wireless is my personal favorite!)

  • Type of Trip: If you plan on working remotely or plan on using quite a a bit of data, Pocket Wifi may provide more ease. I was able to create and edit tons of content on the go with Pocket Wifi for my last work trip.

Which is the best option for Travelers?

Choosing between an eSIM and Pocket WiFi depends entirely on your travel needs and preferences. If convenience and budget are a priority and your device supports it, an eSIM might be the way to go. However, if you're traveling with multiple devices, you’re in a group, you need more data, or plan on working, Pocket WiFi could offer more flexibility and ease of use.

My Recommendation:

  • Short Solo Trips: If possible, opting for an eSIM is convenient and incredibly cost-effective.

  • Group or Work Trips: Pocket WiFi is a great way to ensure all devices stay connected while also securing enough data.

No matter which option you choose, you really can’t go wrong. I hope this was helpful, and I hope you have a wonderful trip to Japan!

❤️, Sugi
